Frequently Asked Questions
What does SSC grading cost?
Current standard grading is $10 per card for 1–9 cards and $5 per card for submissions of 10 or more cards. Current grading prices and fees are subject to change without notice.
Does SSC charge valuation-based fees or upcharges?
No. SSC does not appraise or assign a monetary value to submitted cards, and grading fees are not increased because SSC believes a card may be valuable.
Can SSC grading prices change?
Yes. Published grading prices, bulk pricing, reholder fees, and other service fees are subject to change without notice. The pricing shown when you create a submission is the current SSC pricing.
Is there a minimum grading submission?
SSC accepts smaller submissions at the current 1–9 card rate. The 10+ card rate applies when a qualifying submission contains at least 10 cards.
What cards does SSC currently grade?
SSC grades eligible sports cards and most standard-size trading card game cards. SSC currently accepts Pokémon and other eligible TCG cards but does not currently accept Yu-Gi-Oh, relic/memorabilia cards, or oversized cards.
Does SSC grade vintage cards?
Yes, when the card is otherwise eligible. SSC grading standards account for appropriate vintage-era characteristics while still evaluating the card’s actual condition.
Does SSC grade autographed cards?
Yes, under SSC autograph rules. Pack-pulled autographs may be accepted. Non-pack-pulled autographs require acceptable proof from a reputable authentication source. SSC may request uploaded documentation before grading.
Does SSC authenticate aftermarket signatures?
SSC grading acceptance is not a substitute for independent autograph authentication. When an autograph was not pack-pulled, SSC requires acceptable supporting authentication documentation before the card can be accepted under the autograph policy.
Can an autograph sticker affect the grade?
Yes. Placement and condition defects involving an autograph sticker can affect the card’s grade. A sticker suspected of being removed, replaced, or altered may make the card ineligible for grading.
What does SSC examine when grading?
SSC evaluates Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface, including the applicable front and back observations recorded during grading.
Does SSC use half grades?
No. SSC issues whole-number grades. The detailed report preserves the underlying category information used to determine the final SSC grade.
Can a serious defect limit or prevent a grade?
Yes. Certain defects, alterations, eligibility problems, or condition issues can cap a grade or make a card ineligible for grading. SSC records the applicable reason when a card cannot be graded.
How long does SSC grading take?
SSC’s current estimated turnaround is up to 14 days. Turnaround is an estimate and may change without notice because of submission volume, card complexity, holidays, shipping conditions, or other circumstances. The grading turnaround begins when SSC checks the submission into its system as Received, not when a carrier first marks the package delivered.
What do SSC order statuses mean?
Received means SSC has checked in the submission. In Progress means grading work is underway. Grading Completed means grading is complete and the order is moving through completion. Shipped means the completed order has been released for return shipment.
Can I see my grade before my order ships?
SSC keeps the final grade hidden until the order reaches the Shipped stage. This keeps the grading and completion workflow together before the certification is released.
What is included in an SSC grade report?
Released reports can show the final grade, category scores, recorded observations, scoring effects, card information, certification information, and available front/back card imagery.
What do the category progress bars mean?
The progress bars are a visual presentation of the recorded scores for Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface. They do not replace the numerical scores or change the grading formula.
How do I verify an SSC-graded card?
Open Verify a Grade and enter the SSC certification number printed on the holder. A released certification displays the SSC grading record associated with that number.
How should I prepare cards for submission?
Submit each card in a penny sleeve inside a semi-rigid card holder. Package cards securely so they cannot move freely or be crushed during transit.
How does SSC ship completed submissions?
SSC normally uses USPS for return shipping. Local customers may arrange an in-person drop-off or pickup when that option is available.
Does SSC assign an insurance value to my cards?
No. Because SSC does not appraise or assign monetary values, SSC does not establish an insurance value for a submission. Return-shipping coverage is based on the USPS service selected. Customers who want additional USPS insurance should request it and pay the additional cost.
What if my SSC slab arrives damaged?
Contact SSC promptly and provide clear photographs of the damaged holder and shipping package. SSC will review the damage and provide return instructions. For qualifying return-shipping damage, SSC will pay shipping both ways and re-encapsulate the card without a reholder fee.
What if I damage my SSC holder?
If you damage an SSC holder and want the card re-encapsulated, the current reholder fee is $5 per card. Reholder pricing is subject to change without notice. Contact SSC before sending the card so we can provide instructions.
What should I do if I crack an SSC slab for another grading company?
Please notify SSC and provide the SSC certification number. After review, SSC can retire the certification from active population records so the Population Report does not continue counting a card that is no longer in its SSC holder.
What if an SSC slab or certified card is permanently lost?
You can report a permanently lost SSC slab through the Contact SSC page. Provide the certification number and details. SSC reviews the report before changing the certification or Population Report; a report does not automatically deactivate a certification.
What is the SSC Population Report?
The Population Report tracks released SSC certifications so collectors can see how many qualifying cards have been graded at particular grades. Reporting cracked-out, destroyed, or permanently lost holders helps SSC keep that information accurate.
Do I need a separate account for every SSC service?
No. One SSC account is designed to connect SSC grading, Vault, Exchange, Store/Collectibles, Rewards, and other account features.
Where do I manage my collection?
Use SSC Vault to add and organize collectibles, manage images and details, control public/private visibility, and use connected SSC collection features.
Does SSC determine what my card is worth?
No. SSC grades card condition. SSC does not appraise cards, assign monetary values, or guarantee a future selling price.
Does an SSC grade guarantee my card will increase in value?
No. Market prices can change for many reasons. An SSC grade documents the card’s condition under SSC grading standards; it is not a guarantee of market value or investment performance.
